A cabin above Hood Canal

The site

The lot is a shelf of rock and moss forty feet above the water, reached by a gravel track a crane truck could only just climb. Kvist was chosen because three bays fit between two madronas without cutting either.

The build

The sections were built in Tacoma over thirteen weeks and set in a single morning on four helical piers drilled into the rock. The sedum roof was planted in the factory and arrived green.

Natural larch on the walls will silver within two winters, which is the point: from the water, the cabin is meant to disappear into the bluff.
